HMCCC Members and Friends Enjoy Wings and Wheels in Hagerstown
Saturday, September 9 promised to be excellent weather for the annual Wings and Wheels show at the Hagerstown Airport. About 190 vehicles of all types including cars, trucks, motorcycles, vintage fire engines and even a couple of vintage tractors took advantage of the beautiful weather and joined the museum's collection of planes to make this a very special day. Car show registration was by donation and all proceeds go to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum. John and Janet Stein ran the "wheels" portion of the show along with help from several HMCCC members. Jim and Linda Riggs, Richard Thompson, Paul Schneider, Carroll Anderson, John Anselmo, Mike Locke and Frank Baker were among the 5000+ participants and spectators who came to enjoy the sunshine and all the vehicles and planes. HMCCC friends, JoAnn and J.R. Rosenberger passed out fliers for the Alzheimer's show. The 50-50 was won by Stephen Smith and Hank Sanders won the special drawing for all registered vehicles. He walked away with a nice monetary prize.
For the "wings" side of the show, some very special planes flew in including a B-25 Mitchell named 'Panchito'. Patrons could purchase a "ride" on this plane as well a ride the museum's PT-19. The crowd was entertained by several vintage planes including a biplane and P-51 Mustang that performed some maneuvers in the air that wowed the crowd. A C-123 cargo plane as well as four Maryland National Guard A-10 Warthogs were available for tours. Members of the National Guard ground crew were available to answer questions.
The local band, "New Horizons" performed music for the listening pleasure of the crowd. Also, several aviation related vendors provided opportunities to learn more about aviation related topics. A putt-putt golf course as well as other children's games were provided for the enjoyment of the younger show attendees.
