Spring Cruise May 3, 2015
Smithsonian Institution
National Air and Space Museum |
|
The morning of May 2 dawned brightly with a promise of perfect weather for the HMCCC Spring Cruise. Sixteen members and guest in eight vehicles left Mt. Airy around 9:45, picking up members along route 15/340 south. Members in their classics were Ed and Marsha Zimmerman in Marsha’s ’57 Chevy; Frank and Bev Baker in their shiny black ’57; Butch and Sissy Riley in Red Dawg; John and Janet Stein and Martin Lynard in their ’57 Chevy; Barb Zimmerman and guest, Ann, in Barb’s ’66 Chevelle (top was up!); and John and Janie Anselmo in their ’56 Nomad. In late model steel, Frank and Alice Smith and Bob Wagner rounded out the group. |
Stopping for an early lunch at the Red Robin near Dulles, the group enjoyed delicious food and fast, friendly service. Then it was on to the museum. |
For the next four hours, we wondered around viewing the amazing displays in the museum. The first stop was the observation tower where we were treated to a perfect, 3600 view of Washington, Virginia and Maryland – with the Blue Ridge Mountains and Sugarloaf Mountain shining through the light haze. Ed and Bob were fascinated by the display of all the types of engines. The Space Shuttle, Discovery, and the bomber, “Enola Gay” were the “stars” of US Air and Space History. The Air France SST and the Boeing 707 proved to be interesting as did the displays of other WW II, Korean War and Vietnam era aircraft. |

Sixteen tired, but happy folks gathered in the McCafe on the second floor about 4:00 pm
After a group picture in front of the museum, we loaded up and headed home. But first we had to have an ice cream break at the Rocky Point Creamery very yummy nice way to end our perfect day. Everyone agreed it was a great trip!
Thanks to Janet and John for organizing it. |
