Raffle Rod Project Status Report

The other night several of us met at Chris’ Restorations to help Joe McGinnis prep the Raffle Rod for paint.  Joe has volunteered his time and facilities for the bodywork on the RR and that’s proving to be a pretty big commitment.  A couple of weeks ago we took the body mounted on the frame but stripped of steering, front and rear suspension, etc., over to Joe’s shop for his first real look at the project.

Although the body had been mounted on the frame and everything seemed to go together very well, Joe found the body tweaked a bit and the doors not fitting as well as they should.  As mounted, the cowl was about a half inch out-of-square, the driver’s side door not flush at the bottom and the passenger door out at the top.  The job was to adjust things to get body and doors straight and true.  We also “designed” an additional cross-member to both strengthen and brace the cowl area and provide a mounting point for the dash panel and steering column drop.  We trimmed-up the fiberglass dash panel that came with the body and it should do the job just fine.

As mentioned in “Confessions,” progress on the construction phase of the RR Project is on target and under control.  It’s appropriate at this time to make sure everyone
who has done so much get the credit they’re due:

Jeremy Van Dusen and Supreme Hot Rods, built the frame for the RR, enlisting the help of Lucky 7 Enterprises, Pirate Jack, and Speedway.  SHR also sent a repro steel grill shell, stainless grill and an aluminum radiator.  Lucky 7 Enterprises Inc. provided a chrome front suspension package.  Pirate Jack Hot Rod, Restoration, & OEM Auto Parts provided a four wheel disc brake set-up and Speedway Motors sent us a gift certificate to help with our next purchase.

Rockville Ring and Bearing is in the process of building the Raffle Rod Motor  and we have a transmission and most running-gear components on hand or available thanks to donations from club members and friends.  Ed and Nicole Ruble provided a beautiful new set of custom wheels that are now shod with new tires provided by Archie Davis from D & D Mechanical Enterprises.

Recently Paul Schneider (with my invaluable supervision) removed the front and rear suspension and steering from the RR body and frame so the frame and body can be hauled to Joe McGinnis at Chris’ Classic Restorations where Joe will prep the body for paint.  The frame will be sent to Mt. Airy Coatings, LLC for powder coating.

The plan, at this time, is to have the finished frame with the new engine and trans-mission in place, ready for display at the Alzheimer’s Show.  The body, ready for finish with paint supplied by McHenry’s may be mounted on the frame for the Show!  All of these steps, of course, are contingent upon the schedules of the professionals who have generously offered their products, services, and time to the construction of the Raffle Rod.
