HMCCC Members Enjoy the fall cruise to Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, West Virginia
Saturday October 13 started out a bit rainy and dreary but the die-hard HMCCC members took off for the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. On the trip we encountered rain, fog, snow in the mountains and sunshine and all made it safely to Weston, WV where we enjoyed a very interesting, informative and fun private tour of the huge facility which is the largest hand cut stone constructed building in North America and the second largest in the world, just behind the Kremlin. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, subsequently the Weston State Hospital, was a psychiatric hospital that was operated from 1864 until 1994 by the government of the state of West Virginia and the stories, history and architecture were fascinating. It is now privately owned.
After our tours, we did some driving around and through the small town of Weston. We got to experience going the wrong way down a one-way street, visiting antique shops that were closed and more! We had a lot of laughs and a good time and made our way to the Thyme Bistro on Main Street for a wonderful and special dinner. The restaurant was closed to all except us and the food, service and atmosphere were amazing.
Then we headed to our hotel and the next morning enjoyed a bountiful breakfast buffet and then returned to the asylum for photos and the Criminally Insane tour, which was another great tour of the auxiliary building built to house the criminally insane.
We hit the road amidst a few sprinkles which fortunately didn't amount to a lot, and headed out to a great lunch buffet at Penn Alps Restaurant in Grantsville and a quick stop at the Blue Goose in Hancock.
It was a great weekend with great company and lots of fun! Thanks to all who came along to enjoy the cruise!
